Printing Architecture; A conversation with Ethel Baraona Pohl and Nicholas Korody about architecture and the print medium

By Archinect

Press Play

From their Berlin-based design studio, the team at Book Book engage in hands-on experimentation with a collection of small-format printing presses, testing the creative potential of a technology long considered obsolete. We caught up with the team to discover the story behind their latest project, Im Gebirge: a hardback book they set out to print entirely in-house...

Karlheinz Stockhausen on 'Carré': "This piece tells no story. Each moment can exist independently. One must take one's time if one wishes to absorb this music; most of the changes happen very gently WITHIN the notes. I wish that this music might provide a little inner calm, breadth and concentration; an awareness that we have a lot of time if we are prepared to take it − that it is better to recover oneself than to be beside oneself; because the things which happen need someone for them to happen to, someone has to gather them." [Next Talk #4]: Jack Self - Home Economics

Can the house ever escape its economic status as an asset? Should our homes still be considered private spaces? How do new types of families and households produce new spatial needs? What are the models of ownership, finance and work that make these conditions possible? In this Next Talk, Jack Self explores the moral, political and economic ramifications of property and ownership in neoliberal debt economies, and asks what role the architect might play in addressing widening social and spatial inequality in the built environment.

In "Responding to Particular Needs at a Precise Moment" richtet er seinen Blick auf Architekturen in der albanischen Hauptstadt Tirana .

P E O P L E : ERIC ROGERS
on Communal Life in the Bay Area

MONDAY, 4 March 2018, at 20:00
Books People Places
Kulmer Str. 20A
10783 Berlin

Indoor beaches, alleyway dinner parties, red foggy raves in basements, glitter, wallpaper, purple smoke and a full spectrum of flashing and fading LED lights: these are the markings of contemporary communal life in the Bay Area. In this talk, Eric will speak about the experimental aesthetics of communal living projects in San Francisco, speculating about the origins and significance of this experimentation and drawing comparisons between the 1970s Haight-Ashbury commune known as the Cockettes and the contemporary communes belonging to the Haight Street Commons association.

Eric Wycoff Rogers is a writer, strategist and designer. Eric’s research focuses on American history—specifically the history of social reform during the Progressive era, and the ways that reform organizations shaped everyday life: from municipal governments to urban layouts, the definition of home and domesticity, leisure, families, cultural constructions of sexuality/desire, financial infrastructures and collectively-held aspirations. Eric studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, interior design at California College of the Arts, environmental design at Yale University, and is studying on the Bass Scholarship in urban research at the University of Cambridge.

Eric’s current research looks at the significance of communal living in the twenty-first century, and the para-institutional role that collective housing associations might play in the face of the failures of formal institutions, the market and the state. Drawing from past research into reform organizations, Eric hypothesizes that a well-organized conglomerate of collective organizations could become the institutional voice for post-capitalist futures and new social, emotional and aspirational orientations.

PLACES: Moerenuma Park
Presented by Andrea Canepa
7 Feb 2018, at 19:30

Moerenuma Park is located in Sapporo on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. It was designed by Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) just before his death, and took 17 years to build. Noguchi himself didn’t see its completion. Considered by its author as one single sculpture, the park is a combination of landscape design with a series of playground areas. Moerenuma opened in 2005 and is one of the only chances Noguchi got to fulfill his vision of bringing fine art into the context of everyday living.

Andrea Canepa is a visual artist living in Berlin. Working mostly with sculpture, she was the 2017 artist-in-residence at Bauhaus Master House in Dessau where she developed parts of a project that explores the relations between play, rules, movement and geometry. She is heading to the Jan Van Eyck Academy this April, where she plans to continue her research.

TODAY: Augmented Technology: Launch of Volume 51 / 30.01.2018, 8pm at Theater O-TonArt

As recent technological advancement became more and more pervasive and sophisticated, its consequences became more dramatically evident. In this context, design takes on a new relevance, in organizing and managing spaces, individuals, relations and ultimately societies. But if this is clear, several questions have to be answered: Who is driving it? Does spatial design currently have a say in this, and if not, how can it participate and intervene?

Books People Places and Volume invite you to join the conversation during the launch event of V51 Augmented Technology .

The centerpiece of the night is the panel discussion between Fiona Shipwright , Stefan Heidenreich and Benjamin Busch , moderated by Arjen Oosterman (editor-in-chief of Volume).

The speakers will present three different angles from which to address this relation, further elaborating in the following discussion. Opening the night is a brief presentation of the new issue, its underpinnings and its aim by Leonardo Dellanoce (editor of Volume).

Gemeingut Stadt Berliner Hefte zu Geschichte und Gegenwart der Stadt #4

Heftpräsentation und Diskussion mit dem Herausgeber Mathias Heyden und der Architektin Dagmar Pelger

05.01.2018, 20:30
Pro qm, Almstadtstr. 48-50, 10119 Berlin

PLACES: Kreuzberg Tower

Presented by Ana Filipovic & Philipp Mecke
4 July 2017, at 19:30

A tower and two wings. Kreuzberg assembly is one of the handful of built projects by architect John Hejduk (1929-2000), who was mostly active as an architecture theoretician and educator. The building was commissioned by the city of Berlin during the 1987 IBA (Internationale Bauausstellung) to offer affordable housing to West Berliners. It has since been privatised and at some point the new owners planned to paint over the green balconies with pink. A petition was signed and eventually the city stepped in, keeping the green intact. Ana Filipovic and Philipp Mecke are recent residents in one of the wings. They will introduce the house, the work of John Hejduk, The New York Five and Texas Rangers (the two architecture groups Hejduk was a member of) and perhaps even the Gate House; another of Hejduk’s buildings which is 400 meters away on Friedrichstrasse.

Recent exhibitions and publications include the German Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2012, and the recent Arch+ Feature on Brandlhuber+ Legislating Architecture.
