LIFE ITSELF

Camera Austria 133 2016

Was wird ihm zugemutet?

Texte zur Kunst, März 2016

Polarities / Polarität

Issue No. 101 of Texte zur Kunst takes "Polarities" as its theme − a term we associate with what's unfolding around us right now: ideological polarization, from Pegida to Donald Trump. How do we understand the growing gap between the ideals of tech/smooth space (where the art world tends to reside, swiftly neutralizing any resistance as "content") and the striated regions of material unrest? How do we understand "polarization" despite our dominant, and inherently continuous, neoliberal system?

Timothy Brennan, Philipp Felsch, Helmut Draxler, Carolin Emcke, Roy Scranton, @LilIntenrnet, Daniel Colucciello Barber, Davis Rhodes, Antek Walczak, Gabriele Werner, Inge-Maria Peters, Sven Lütticken, Svenja Bromberg, Tobias Madison, Hans-Jürgen Hafner, Astrid Mania, Ana Teixeira Pinto, Beate Söntgen, Daniel Keller, Manfred Hermers, Eva Kernbauer, Barbara Buchmaier, Christine Woditschka, Sarah Lookofsky, David Rimanelli, Maria Muhle, Gili Tal, Jenny NAchtigall, Yilmaz Dziewior, Rhea Anastas, Thea Djordjadze, Dana Schutz

[Log 36]

Guest edited by architect Greg Lynn, Log 36: ROBOLOG explores the challenges and potentials posed to architecture by the rapidly accelerating field of robotics. [AG 6] - House Jumsai

AG 6 retraces moments of Sumet Jumsai biography, while concentrating on the documentation of the last days of his penthouse on top of the condominium complex he built on the Charlermnit Court near Sukhumvit road.

[AG 5] - Siam Area / Former British Council / WWA

AG 5 documents the building of the former British Council in Bangkok, built in the 1970 by architect Sumet Jumsai. The issue concentrates on the upper floor of the building, occupied by fashion label WWA, with their cultivated taste for luxurious invisibilitiy, and includes a short interview with the three founders of WWA.

[AG (Architektur in Gebrauch)] is a magazine for architecture in use. Each number of this series documents one building or one built structure in its current state, considering its transformation while looking back at the moment when it was built. The term "use" (Gebrauch) constitutes from this perspective the driving force behind the development of every built structure.

[Building the City Together|

Building the City Together explores the topic of action in public space, through the scope of a common space for living, working and thinking together designed and built on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt in 2014. The Osthang Summer School, curated by raumlaborberlin, invited 60 participants to settle there for three weeks as a new artist colony. Artists? Or were they architects, furniture makers, landscape designers, cooks, or maybe civilians?

[e-flux journal #69]

1 / 2016

Needless to say: the problems are scary. From violence and apparently constant massacres to the re-establishment of borders and controls of all kinds; from censorship, racist and nationalist rhetoric, to creeping militarization and the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of refugees-all of this is starting to resemble the conditions that preceded the last world war. In the face of all this, how do we go about thinking of a way out?

[Ruhrtriennale]: Carré / Karlsheinz Stockhausen, Bochumer Symphoniker, Chorwerk Ruhr

Karlheinz Stockhausen on 'Carré': "This piece tells no story. Each moment can exist independently. One must take one's time if one wishes to absorb this music; most of the changes happen very gently WITHIN the notes. I wish that this music might provide a little inner calm, breadth and concentration; an awareness that we have a lot of time if we are prepared to take it − that it is better to recover oneself than to be beside oneself; because the things which happen need someone for them to happen to, someone has to gather them." [Next Talk #4]: Jack Self - Home Economics

Can the house ever escape its economic status as an asset? Should our homes still be considered private spaces? How do new types of families and households produce new spatial needs? What are the models of ownership, finance and work that make these conditions possible? In this Next Talk, Jack Self explores the moral, political and economic ramifications of property and ownership in neoliberal debt economies, and asks what role the architect might play in addressing widening social and spatial inequality in the built environment.

Europe: the Reconstruction of the Free World

By Ulrike Guérot and Robert Menasse

National borders are realitiy - and for most people, they are something that is taken for granted and indeed necessary. But are they really the normal state of affairs? A critical and historical approach suggests this is in fact a very recent development. By recognising this, we can start to open our minds to imagine new ways of including ‘Others’ within our own borders. A radical futuristic plan for a borderless Europe.

"Power and the Space of the Planet"

Spanning the planet, the dynamics of climate change bind together innumerable, often incompatible categories, things, and processes. Among these are energy infrastructures, politics, nature, biological and social life, and the built and unbuilt environment.

The event inaugurates the Buell Center's new, long-term research project, "Power," which extends the Center's recent work on housing, inequality, and real estate into another dimension of the planetary commons. [more]

Independent Architectural Publications / Architecture In Print: New Editorial Manifestos

From journals to pamphlets, broadsheets to tearsheets, architectural publications of the past few years have been sites of innovation in both editorial style and content. Through their polyvocality and mutable forms, these not-always-so-little magazines have broadened architectural discourse, pushing designers to become writers, writers to engage design, and editors to operate within and without traditional institutional frameworks. In each of their particular approaches they remind us, again, of the political import of print and its inextricability from architectural thought.

[ Book for Architects]

Wednesday the 30. September 2015 to Friday the 4. December 2015 / ETH Zürich, Hönggerberg, HIL, E1

Architects write books, read books, love books and collect books. Books loom large for architects − books that endeavor to talk about architecture, books that are a source of inspiration, a forum for polemics, an expression of dreams, wishful thinking and so much more. This exhibition showcases a historical selection of special "books for architects" as well as commentary on books by contemporary architects, historians and theorists, who, in various forms, conceptually and concretely explore a great many aspects of books for architects. Selected items are spatially arranged within the exhibition, moreover, for a mise en scène of reading, writing and collecting books.
